Peter and I used Thursday's class to create a plan of action. We went through each publication that we found and carefully selected the publications Peter will be submitting to. From a selection of over 10 possible publications, we narrowed down the list to the following :
The Georgia Review (5/14)
Tin House (5/31)
The New England Review (5/31)
Agni (5/31)
Granta (year-round)
McSweeny (year-round)
We decided against the following publications because of past deadline dates or the style of writing was not cohesive to Peter's style, or both:
Ploughshares
Conjunctions
Triquarterly
The Paris Review
Virginia Quaterly Review
We discussed Peter's new piece, The Witch Queen and the Steamer Trunk. Although I enjoyed the story, I was not satisfied with the ending. The story ends with a twist, revealing that while the protagonist travels to France to fulfill the last wish of his deceased best friend, Robert discovers that his friend was secretly in love with him. I felt that this ending was not as strong as the rest of story and a story line that involves a homosexual relationship can be taken as comical rather than serious. I expressed this concern to Peter and he agreed that the ending needed some work. Also, there were moments in Peter's writing when he became too formal, making the dialogue between characters seem forced. Peter agreed that this is a habit he is working on.
Until our next meeting, I am going to review Peter's other story, Darn That Dream , and Peter is going to draft a cover letter.
